New cumulative update for Windows 10, new problems

Microsoft rolled out new cumulative updates this week as part of the October 2020 Patch Tuesday cycle, and Windows 10 version 2004, or May 2020 Update, received KB4579311.

While everything appeared to be working just fine at first, it now looks like this cumulative update is hitting a series of issues, including the infamous failed installation that occurred so many times before.

A report from TechDows points to various discussions on Microsoft Community forums where users complain of problems with the new cumulative update.

Among them there’s the failed installation, which typically happens when rebooting the device. The computer eventually undoes the changes and returns to the desktop without making any changes.

On the other hand, others are complaining that the desktop sometimes turns black after the installation of this cumulative update, while some users explain that KB4579311 causes File Explorer, the default file manager that comes bundled with Windows 10, keeps crashing again and again.

No fix just yet

In most of the cases, manually downloading a cumulative update, and thus skipping the Windows Update service, helps deal with all these problems, but this doesn’t seem to be the case this time. Users are complaining that not even downloading the update from the Microsoft Update Catalog does the trick, and in some cases, it fails with the same error.

Is there anything you can do in order to bring things back to normal? Not really, unless you are ready to completely uninstall this cumulative update from your device. Of course, this isn’t necessarily the best way to go given that security fixes are also included.

For the time being, Microsoft is yet to acknowledge all these struggles, so it remains to be seen if any fixes or workarounds are eventually provided. At this point, just make sure you send feedback to the company if such errors are encountered.
