Notepad, Paint, and others removed by this new update

KB4565503 is a Windows 10 cumulative update that was released as part of this month’s Patch Tuesday cycle, being specifically aimed at devices running version 2004, or May 2020 Update.

Despite the update coming with a series of security improvements, it looks like KB4565503 also hides an issue that currently appears to affect just a small set of users.

More specifically, these unlucky users found out that after installing cumulative update KB4565503, some apps that typically come pre-loaded with Windows 10 are no longer there. In other words, the update silently deletes some apps, and the only way to get them app is for users to manually reinstall them one by one.

By the looks of things, the apps that are silently uninstalled by this update include WordPad, Notepad, Paint, and possibly others. The good news is that installing them doesn’t take more than a few clicks, as the whole thing is possible from the optional features screen in Windows 10.

Just one known bug in this update

Microsoft is yet to acknowledge this issue in cumulative update KB4565503, and the official KB page points to just one known bug. It’s the Microsoft IME glitch that affects only a couple of languages like Japanese and Chinese.

“When using some apps, such as Microsoft Excel, users of the Microsoft Input Method Editor (IME) for Chinese and Japanese might receive an error, or the app might stop responding or close when attempting to drag using the mouse,” Microsoft says.

For the time being, the good news is that not a lot of users are impacted by this cumulative update problem, so it’s not a widespread issue that must be urgently corrected. But on the other hand, it’s yet another indication that installing cumulative updates on day one is a risky game that fewer are willing to play, especially on production devices.
