Windows 10 cumulative update KB4557957, which was published as part of this month’s Patch Tuesday rollout, comes to resolve a known bug in version 2004 (May 2020 Update) and hitting some Microsoft Surface devices.

More specifically, Windows 10 May 2020 Update shipped with a known issue that could cause errors or unexpected devices on devices with Always on, Always Connected network adapters.

Microsoft confirmed the problem affected the Surface Laptop 3 and the Surface Pro 7, and originally set an upgrade block, which means the update isn’t offered to these devices.

“Some devices using the Always On, Always Connected feature might have compatibility issues with Windows 10, version 2004 (the Windows 10 May 2020 Update). Affected devices will have more than one Always On, Always Connected capable network adapter, such as the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 and Microsoft Surface Laptop 3, and might receive errors or unexpected shutdown or restart,” Microsoft said.

Update still blocked on impacted devices

Windows 10 May 2020 Update was launched in late May as a manual download on Windows Update for devices running version 1903 and 1909. However, due to the upgrade block, systems potentially affected by the issue detailed here weren’t offered the new feature update.

“To safeguard your update experience, we have applied a compatibility hold on Windows 10 devices with affected drivers or firmware from being offered Windows 10, version 2004,” Microsoft said.

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4557957 mitigates the problem, but what’s important to know is that the upgrade block is still in place, which means the impacted devices still aren’t offered the update. Microsoft says it expects everything to be back to normal and start offering these systems the May 2020 Update at some point in the coming weeks, most likely as the reliability of the fix is more thoroughly tested.
