Microsoft has released the very first update for Windows 10 version 2004, or May 2020 Update, as part of the June 2020 Patch Tuesday cycle.

This update is KB4557957, and since it lands on Patch Tuesday, it obviously comes with a series of security fixes, but there are also other welcome non-security improvements available this time.

If your device has already been updated to Windows 10 version 2004, here’s everything you need to know about this new cumulative update.

What’s new in Windows 10 cumulative update KB4557957

First and foremost, the changes. This new cumulative update includes security improvements for Windows 10 and the pre-loaded components, like Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, the Windows kernel, and the Windows Shell.

There are security improvements for Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge, Office, Microsoft Xbox, and the Microsoft Store, but also for those scenarios when you use external devices like game controllers.

As for the non-security fixes, there are updates for verifying usernames and passwords, storing and managing files, as well optimizations for the touch experience when the keyboard is removed.

As said, it’s not a surprise that the focus is on security improvements given this update lands on a Patch Tuesday. And this is what makes it a recommended update, as you need to install this one as soon as possible to resolve any vulnerabilities that might exist in your OS.

At the same time, KB4557957 also resolves a bug preventing Windows 10 version 2004 from being offered to some specific Always-On and Always-Connected devices and which triggered an upgrade block. However, despite the issue mitigated already, Microsoft is yet to remove the upgrade block.

Known issues

There are no known issues in this update, which is more or less surprising given these releases typically come with problems, especially as such an early point after the rollout of Windows 10 version 2004.

In other words, Microsoft says that you should be able to install cumulative update KB4557957 on your device just right, without coming across any issue whatsoever.

On the other hand, as we learned in the past, cumulative update sometime come with bugs that aren’t acknowledged from the very beginning, so there’s a chance you could still experience certain problems after installing it. We’ll continue to monitor reports and let you know about it.

Download options

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4557957 is available on the regular distribution channels, which include Windows Update, the Microsoft Update Catalog, and the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

Of course, you are also recommended to install the latest servicing stack update, which right now is KB4560366. If automatic updates are enabled on your computer, this SSU should be offered to your device without the need for any input on your side.

Other info

This new cumulative update increases the OS build number to 19041.329, and you can check this by simply clicking the Start menu and then typing winver. If this is the build number of your OS, it means the update has already been installed.

At the time of writing this article there are no reports of failed installs and everything seems to be working as expected so far. What you need to know, however, is that completing the update requires a system reboot, so make sure that you save your work before everything else. As always, a backup could also be a good idea just to make sure everything is working correctly.

If you’re looking for the list of files that are included in this cumulative update, Microsoft is offering a CSV log in this regard, and you can find it on this link.
