Deferral settings back in Windows Update

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4524570 was published for version 1903 and 1909 on this month’s Patch Tuesday to bring new security fixes and resolve a series of non-security bugs.

And while some complain that this update actually fails to install on Windows 10 version 1909, those still running version 1903 are getting a bonus in the form of a silent fix for a bug hitting a small number of devices.

As discovered by WL, cumulative update KB4524570 brings back deferral options for Windows update on devices where these previously disappeared for no clear reason.

Microsoft hasn’t said a single word about such a bug fix, so I’ve reached out to the company to ask for more information and will update the article when a response is offered.

New cumulative updates just around the corner

Microsoft is projected to release new non-security cumulative updates in just a few days for all Windows 10 versions, including the recently-launched Windows 10 version 1909 (November 2019 Update).

These updates will be offered as optional, meaning users will have to manually check for updates in Windows Update to be able to download them.

On the other hand, new cumulative updates with both security and non-security improvements are projected to land on December 10 as part of the last Patch Tuesday of the year. The December cumulative updates will contain all changes made previously, including this presumed fix for the deferral bug.

Options to defer updates are pretty important in Windows 10, as they allow users to delay the installation of updates that Microsoft ships for their devices. These controls target both feature updates and quality updates (cumulative updates) and are available in the Advanced Options screen of Windows 10 in the Settings app.
