Microsoft has already acknowledged this bug on Windows 10

The most recent cumulative update released by Microsoft for Windows 10 version 1809 breaks down a feature in the pre-installed antivirus in the operating system.

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4520062 was published on October 15 for devices running Windows 10 version 1809, also known as October 2019 Update.

And according to Microsoft, installing this update could cause the Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection, or ATP, to stop running on some devices.

“The Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) service might stop running and might fail to send reporting data. You might also receive a 0xc0000409 error in Event Viewer on MsSense.exe,” Microsoft explains.

Fix coming in November

In addition to Windows 10 version 1809, which is primarily affected by the issue, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019, Windows Server version 1809, and Windows Server 2019 are also hit.

Unfortunately for customers who can no longer use Microsoft Defender ATP after installing the cumulative update, there’s no workaround available at this point, other than removing the update altogether. Of course, this means that you’re going to miss the latest improvements that Microsoft released, but at least the antivirus feature will be working again.

The software giant claims that it’s already working on a fix, and most likely, it’s projected to land on the November 2019 Patch Tuesday. Next month, Patch Tuesday takes place on November 12, and all Windows 10 versions will get new cumulative updates containing both security and non-security improvements.

“At this time, we suggest that devices in an affected environment do not install KB4520062. We are working on a resolution and estimate a solution will be available in mid-November,” Microsoft explains.

No other versions of Windows 10 are affected by this problem, so Microsoft Defender ATP should be working normally after installing the latest cumulative updates.
