Microsoft says a patch coming in mid-September

The most recent optional cumulative update that Microsoft shipped for devices running Windows 10 version 1903, also referred to as May 2019 Update, not only that generates high CPU usage, but also breaks down search for some.

Cumulative update KB4512941 was published on August 30 for devices running the most recent stable version of Windows 10. However, as per a number of user reports, installing KB4512941 leads to CPU usage spikes for a resource called SearchUI and belonging to digital assistant Cortana.

Furthermore, WL has come across user reports, like this one, that the very same cumulative update also breaks down the search feature, instead displaying nothing more than a big black box.

“I updated to Windows 10 1903 version just now and all of a sudden my search function has stopped working. When I now type something in the search bar nothing will come up and its [sic] now just a black screen,” reddit user Boz1ful explains in the linked discussion.

This behavior is caused by the latest Windows 10 version 1903 cumulative update, and removing it brings the search feature to fully working condition.

Fix coming later this month

Microsoft has confirmed in a post on the Windows update dashboard that it’s looking into reports of issues caused by this cumulative update.

“Microsoft is getting reports that a small number of users may not receive results when using Windows Desktop Search and may see high CPU usage from SearchUI.exe when searching after installing KB4512941. This issue is only encountered on devices in which searching the web from Windows Desktop Search has been disabled,” the firm says.

Only Windows 10 version 1903 running cumulative update KB4512941 (OS build 18362.329) is affected, Microsoft says.

A fix is already in the works, and if everything goes according to the plan, it should be released to users later this month, possibly on the September 10 Patch Tuesday.
