The number of users who managed to download and install Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) during the few days it was up for grabs isn’t huge.

However, because the OS comes with several major bugs, Microsoft rolled out cumulative update KB4464330 on Patch Tuesday to deliver not only security improvements, but also fixes for some of these issues.

But as it turns out, the experience with cumulative update KB4464330 isn’t exactly flawless for some users. And according to reports on reddit, for instance, the update fails to install on the first attempt, but completes correctly on the second.

“My cumulative update shows up as Failed and then Successful after the restart. I also noticed it seemed to install twice when using Windows Update. Anyone else? Looks like it failed the first time it tried to install. Anyway, up to date after restarting, whole process was fast. The failed update had an error 0x8024200d,” reddit user Sky187 explained, while others confirmed the same behavior on their devices as well.

Service Stack Update required

While this hasn’t yet been confirmed, the installation issue may be caused by the lack of the Windows 10 version 1809 Service Stack Update.

As the official KB page of cumulative update KB4464330 states, KB4465477 is required to install this patch, though Microsoft explains that systems connecting to Windows Update would get it all automatically.

“Windows cumulative updates require that you install the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system before installing the latest cumulative update (LCU). This helps to mitigate potential issues while installing the LCU,” it says.

At this point, it’s not known how widespread this problem really is, as the majority of reports seem to indicate that cumulative update KB4464330 installed correctly. Everything went well on our testing systems here, so it remains to be seen if the number of people complaining of installation issues would increase in the coming days.
