Notifications now being displayed in Windows Update

Microsoft will begin showing notifications on devices running Windows 10 versions that are set to expire soon, as the company wants all users to update to supported releases before the end of support date is reached.

Microsoft typically displays end of life notifications on older Windows versions, including Windows 7, but as far as Windows 10 is concerned, such an approach is yet to be used here.

But beginning with the Windows 10 April 2018 Update, which is set to go dark later this year, Microsoft will warn users that updating to a newer release is the only way to go to continue getting new features and security improvements.

When a Windows version reaches the end of support, it no longer receives updates and security patches.

Windows Update warning

A message spotted by WL in Windows Update on a Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803) device warns users that the end of support is approaching.

“You’re currently running a version of Windows that’s nearing the end of support. We recommend you update to the most recent version of Windows 10 now to get the latest features and security improvements,” this message in Windows Update reads.

But as compared to the other warnings displayed on older Windows versions, this one is less intrusive, as it can only be spotted in Windows Update and no user interaction is required to dismiss it or anything like that.

On the other hand, the likelihood of some people to notice it is much lower, especially in the case of beginners who don’t visit the Windows Update settings page too often.

It remains to be seen if Microsoft plans to go for a more effective warning system like notifications displayed on the desktop, but for now, keep in mind that without updating to the latest Windows 10 version you’re missing out on all the newest features and improvements for the OS.
