Users now complain of slow write speeds after update

Two of the bugs in Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803) hit Intel and Toshiba SSDs, causing the first to encounter a BSOD and the latter to experience lower battery life.

Microsoft, however, fixed these issues with the release of cumulative update KB4100403 for Windows 10 April 2018 Update on May 23, unblocking the upgrade on devices equipped with the aforementioned hardware.

But by the looks of things, it now seems the bug hasn’t been entirely resolved with this update and, what’s more, some users say other issues have been causes.

First and foremost, there were two different bugs, one hitting devices with Intel SSD 600p Series or Intel SSD Pro 6000p and another one affecting devices with Toshiba XG4 Series, Toshiba XG5 Series, or Toshiba BG3 Series SSDs. Microsoft said KB4100403 addressed SSD issues, in turn making it possible for users with these drives to upgrade to version 1803 flawlessly.

More bugs on Intel and Toshiba SSDs

We’re now seeing reports that on Intel SSDs, similar issues are still being experienced, despite the number of such cases being substantially smaller than before. But in the case of Toshiba SSD users, it looks like the fix in its turn has caused slow write speeds on these drives, despite the battery bug no longer experience.

There are several reports here and here (and possibly in other Microsoft Community discussion threads), pointing out that Toshiba SSD performance has been impacted by the installation of Windows 10 cumulative update KB4100403.

“After installing the latest Windows updates, including Version 1803 and KB4100403, my Toshiba XG5's sequential write speeds have fallen from ~2000 MB/s to ~460 MB/s, slower than its 4K 8 queue depth, 4 thread random write speed,” one user explained.

Microsoft hasn’t yet acknowledged this bug, but with a new patching cycle just around the corner on June 12, expect more fixes for the Windows 10 April 2018 Update to ship soon.
