Microsoft says AI helped provide smooth upgrade experience

Microsoft has recently announced that Windows 10 April 2018 Update is broadly available for all devices across the world, and in a blog post today, the company explains that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the one to thank to for this.

When the company releases new OS features updates, it typically takes approximately three months to complete the rollout. But for the April 2018 Update, the final stage has been reached must faster thanks to AI, John Cable, Partner Director of Software Engineering, Windows Servicing and Delivery, says.

“Our AI approach intelligently selects devices that our feedback data indicate would have a great update experience and offers the April 2018 Update to these devices first,” Cable notes.

“As our rollout progresses, we continuously collect update experience data and retrain our models to learn which devices will have a positive update experience, and where we may need to wait until we have higher confidence in a great experience. Our overall rollout objective is for a safe and reliable update, which means we only go as fast as is safe.”

250 million systems already running it

Microsoft says it used a similar AI approach as an experiment with the Fall Creators Update, and it used from the beginning of the rollout for the April 2018 Update.

Windows 10 April 2018 Update is the fastest-adopted version of Windows 10 so far, with nearly 250 million devices already running it, out of a total of approximately 700 PCs overall on the operating system. There are fewer bugs, Microsoft says, and the customer satisfaction is much improved.

“Early data shows the quality of the April 2018 Update exceeding earlier versions of Windows 10 in both reliability and performance,” Cable notes. “Our internal customer support teams are seeing a continued reduction in call and online support requests for Windows 10 with the April 2018 Update. Our OEMs also continue to experience reductions in monthly customer support volumes with this update.”

Windows 10 April 2018 Update can now be downloaded on any Windows 10 PC from Windows Update, as the process will be initiated and completed all automatically.
