Some PCs can’t be upgraded to Windows 10 version 1803

Upgrading a system to the newly-released Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803) isn’t as easy as you’d be tempted to believe, as the process sometimes fails unexpectedly with error messages that don’t tell anything about the cause of the problem.

This is what happened in the case of several Windows 10 users to turned to Microsoft’s Community forums to report the issues (here, here, here, and in many other threads).

Two of the most common error messages experienced during install are 0xc1900209 and 0xc1900101, though we’ve found reports pointing to other variations of these two, including 0x80070005 and 0x80240034.

As said, these error messages don’t provide any worthy details on what’s causing the failed install, but on the other hand, it’s believed they are mostly the result of compatibility issues with the running software or other generic problems like low disk space.

Fixes coming next week

In the last couple of days, we’ve received plenty of reports from users complaining of issues with the upgrade process to Windows 10 April 2018 Update, but most of the installs were blocked by software problems, including security applications that prevented the systems from being upgraded. Low disk space is also a common issue, so before beginning the update, make sure that you have enough free storage on the C: drive.

Microsoft will release the first public cumulative updates for Windows 10 April 2018 Update next week on Patch Tuesday when it also begins the automatically rollout of the new OS version.

This is due to happen on May 8, and the April 2018 Update cumulative update will most likely address many of these problems, especially because Microsoft needs to ensure a smooth upgrade since the new OS version would be pushed automatically to more systems.

It remains to be seen how smoothly the upgrade process would go next week, but for the time being, bugs like these will continue to be hit.
