Patch should land soon, fix already in preview build

Windows 10 April 2018 Update is a major step forward when it comes to the evolution of Fluent Design in the operating system, as it makes effects like acrylic and reveal more prominent across the entire UI.

But a recently-discovered bug breaks down the Fluent Design experience in the Windows 10 Start menu when running the April 2018 Update, and this post on reddit describes exactly how the behavior can be reproduced.

Basically, it all comes down to moving the cursor around in the Start menu before stopping for a second on an icon to have the tooltip showing up. This triggers the bug instantly, causing the reveal highlight effect to be disabled in the Start menu for a reason that’s yet to be determined.

Fix coming on next Patch Tuesday?

Users confirmed on reddit that this issue can be reproduced easily on their systems, but on the other hand, we’re not experiencing the same behavior on our systems upgraded to Windows 10 April 2018 Update. We’ve tried reproducing the bug on two different machines, but everything appears to be working correctly, with Fluent Design unaffected by the described steps.

On the other hand, it looks Microsoft is already aware of the problem, and Jen Gentleman, a company engineer involved in the development of new Windows 10 builds as part of the Insider program, says this “is likely related to an issue that was fixed recently in the Fast ring.” In other words, a patch is currently available for preview builds and it should be released soon to all users as well.

The next Patch Tuesday cycle takes place on June 12, and a cumulative update for Windows 10 April 2018 Update is likely to be included as well.

If all the recently-reported bugs are fixed, the next cumulative update could be huge, as Windows 10 April 2018 Update is at this point far from offering smooth performance to users.
