New feature coming to WhatsApp in future update

WhatsApp is working on new customization features for its mobile client, and according to new findings in the beta builds, new wallpaper settings are on their way to iPhone and Android.

More specifically, the Facebook-owned company wants WhatsApp users to be able to set different wallpapers per each chat and not just a global background as it’s currently the case in the app.

Interestingly enough, WhatsApp could also resurrect the seemingly abandoned WhatsApp wallpapers app that hasn’t received a single update in some nine years. Most likely, WhatsApp wants to provide users with more wallpapers, thus giving them the option to customize their chats without necessarily having to use their own photos.

Without a doubt, this is a cool feature coming to WhatsApp, and customization options are very often received well by users out there. WhatsApp wants to release different sets of wallpapers that would adapt to the theme used on the device – the mobile client now supports both a dark and a light theme on Android and iPhone, so the wallpapers would be enabled to follow the system settings.

No ETA just yet

WhatsApp is currently the number one messaging app on mobile devices, but at the same time, the adoption of rival solutions like Telegram is growing at a fast pace.

As compared to WhatsApp, however, Telegram is being updated with major improvements much more often, and most updates include not only customization options, but also additional privacy and security controls.

WhatsApp, on the other hand, releases updates at a much slower pace, so right now, it’s still not clear when the new wallpaper feature is supposed to arrive for users who aren’t part of the beta build. But given the testing has already started, there’s a chance this feature could be here by the end of the year.
