The company is working on a new security feature

WhatsApp is currently the number one instant messaging platform, and as a result, it has also been the target of malicious people who wanted to take over the control of user accounts.

The Facebook-owned company has been working on multiple fronts to add new security features to WhatsApp, and now according to WABetaInfo, it’s getting ready for a similar update that could first make its debut on the iPhone.

As it turns out, whenever users will attempt to register the phone number on another smartphone, WhatsApp will require a second code from the main device to make sure it’s the actual owner who is trying to add a new device.

“The number XXX is already being used for WhatsApp on another phone. To help make sure that your account is in your control, you must confirm another verification code. For extra security, you must wait for the timer to finish before you can send the code. When you receive the code, enter it here,” a notification that shows up on the new device reads.

Currently in development

Without a doubt, such a feature makes total sense, especially as WhatsApp is expanding the availability of multi-device support for WhatsApp accounts.

For the time being, the new security protection is still in the development phase, so it could take a while until it becomes available for users out there.

But on the other hand, once it goes live, getting access to someone else’s WhatsApp account is going to be much harder, especially because getting access to the verification code will be much more difficult given a double-verification will be used.

At this point, there’s no ETA as to when the rollout to production devices will begin, but it should happen later this year when the development is complete.
