Meta, the new parent company of WhatsApp, has just announced that the service is being updated with support for avatars.

If you’ve been using other messaging apps, such as Telegram, you probably know already that WhatsApp is lagging behind its rivals whenever it comes to things like stickers, emojis, avatars, and so on.

But after the most recent update, WhatsApp is also getting avatars that can also be configured as the default profile photo.

The way this feature was developed allows users not only to create their very own avatar from scratch using a plethora of customization options but also to choose from a collection of custom stickers that have already been created by the WhatsApp team and integrated into the app.

If you want to create your own avatar, you can choose from various unique features, such as different hair styles, outfits, and so on.

Your avatar is a digital version of you that can be created from billions of combinations of “diverse hair styles, facial features, and outfits. On WhatsApp you can now use your personalized avatar as your profile photo or choose from one of 36 custom stickers reflecting many different emotions and actions,” WhatsApp explained.

“Sending an avatar is a fast and fun way to share feelings with friends and family. It can also be a great way to represent yourself without using your real photo so it feels more private. For many people this will be the first time creating an avatar and we'll continue to deliver style enhancements including lighting, shading, hair style textures, and more that will make avatars even better over time.”

The new feature has started rolling out to Android and iPhone users today, so it should already be there on your smartphone if you’re running the latest version of WhatsApp.
