Transferring data between the two platforms now supported

WhatsApp is without a doubt the number one mobile messaging platform out there, with a huge number of users running it on both iPhone and Android.

But until recently, switching from one platform to another without losing the WhatsApp data has been one major pain in the neck, as the data was lost because no common cloud service was used by Android and iOS.

Facebook addressed this shortcoming last year when it introduced a more straightforward way to switch from iPhone to Android, and now, the company is releasing a similar update for the other way around.

The new feature is available in the Move to iOS app

Mark Zuckerberg announced today that users can now transfer their data from Android to iPhone. The process takes place via the Move to iOS app, which now shows WhatsApp as an option when performing the transfer.

“We're adding to WhatsApp the ability to securely switch between phones and transfer your chat history, photos, videos, and voice messages between Android and iPhone while maintaining end-to-end encryption. This is a top requested feature. We launched the ability to switch from iPhone-->Android last year, and now adding Android-->iPhone as well,” Zuckerberg announced.

Needless to say, the process has been designed to be as straightforward as possible, but depending on the data that is stored in your WhatsApp account, it could also be a lengthy migration. The transfer takes time, especially if you’re trying to move gigabytes of media content, such as videos.

But at the end of the day, being able to transfer the WhatsApp data from Android to iPhone could be another reason for Google users to get an iPhone, as the migration has until now been quite a struggle. The new feature is available today for all users on Android with the Move to iOS app.
