The mystery of two black iPhones with two different finishes

Apple’s iPhone 11 is available in multiple colors, including white, green, yellow, purple, and black, with a (PRODUCT)RED version also offered as part of the program that Apple uses to contribute to the Global Fund to fight AIDS.

As we all know already, Apple has released all these iPhone finishes with its very own personal touch, so instead of a regular color, what you get is a premium paint that makes sense on a device that costs so much – iPhone 11 starts at $699 for the base model in the United States.

Furthermore, it’s not a secret that Apple typically pays much attention to every little detail on the iPhone, and this is why the build quality is so impressive. So in theory, you wouldn’t expect one iPhone 11 to be different from another with the same finish.

And yet, a photo showing two black iPhones with different finishes on reddit is close to going viral, as lots of people are trying to solve the mystery of the differences between the two despite the fact they are supposed to be identical.

Technically, what we have here are two iPhone 11 units painted in black. The finish on the camera bump, however, is different, with one using full black, while the other sports a grey version for whatever reason.

Users who joined the reddit discussion are trying to figure out how come there’s a difference between these two because, at least theoretically, it’s pretty much impossible for Apple to release a device with what appears to be a minor manufacturing effect.

There are all kinds of theories regarding the difference in color on the camera bump:

Left is a fake – Some people think the iPhone on the left is a knockoff.

“I have the white iPhone 11 and the right one looks more similar to mine, so I guess something is wrong with the left one,” one user says before another one puts it simple. “Left is fake,” they say.

Right is a fake – Others believe the iPhone on the right is fake given the color of the camera bump.

“What I’m saying is iPhones 11 have a clear glass back with a frosted camera bump. Therefore the one in the back is definitely real. The one in the front might be real with a manufacturing defect or fake as the microphone placement seems a bit off,” one user explains.

Manufacturing defect – There are users who believe that the difference between the two is mostly the result of a manufacturing defect, albeit it goes without saying such things aren’t very common in the Apple world, especially given the company’s obsession for state-of-the-art build quality.

Both are fake – There’s also a fourth theory suggesting that both are fake, although this is again very unlikely.

While I’m not going to tell you which one is real and which isn’t, it’s worth reminding the knockoffs are getting better and better and the differences between a fake and a real model are becoming a lot more difficult to notice. The knockoffs typically run Android, and scammers might attempt to sell them online as legitimate models, usually much cheaper than the real deal.

On the other hand, if you do purchase an iPhone from the Apple Store or any other authorized reseller, the chances to notice such a difference versus a genuine iPhone are extremely small, as the whole thing can only be the result of a manufacturing error.
