14 DAY TRIAL // The May 2021 Patch Tuesday rollout obviously includes a new cumulative update for Windows 10 version 20H2, which right is the most recent stable version of the operating system.
The Windows 10 version 20H2 cumulative update is KB5003173, and it comes with several security improvements, which makes total sense given this is a Patch Tuesday rollout.
According to the official changelog, this cumulative update includes security updates for Bluetooth drivers, but also other security refinements for the operating system when basic operations are performed. And last but not least, it comes with updates for the Windows OLE (compound documents) security.
The official changelog doesn’t include too many details, but only mentions “security updates to Windows App Platform and Frameworks, the Windows Kernel, Windows Media, the Microsoft Scripting Engine, and the Windows Silicon Platform.”
Worth knowing is that the same cumulative update is also released to devices Windows 10 version 2004, as the two operating systems share a similar codebase.
Known issues
The good news is that no new known issues have been reported, though, on the other hand, there are four different bugs that you need to check out (all of them are detailed on the KB page linked above).
One particular problem concerns Microsoft Edge legacy, the browser that has already been removed from Windows 10 and replaced with a Chromium successor.
“Devices with Windows installations created from custom offline media or custom ISO image might have Microsoft Edge Legacy removed by this update, but not automatically replaced by the new Microsoft Edge. This issue is only encountered when custom offline media or ISO images are created by slipstreaming this update into the image without having first installed the standalone servicing stack update (SSU) released March 29, 2021 or later,” Microsoft says.
The easiest workaround for users hitting this bug is to just install the new Microsoft Edge on their devices.
