This is the update aimed at latest Windows 10 versions

The new Windows 10 cumulative updates released a few hours ago are obviously focused on security improvements, and this makes perfect sense since they landed as part of the October Patch Tuesday.

If you’re running the latest Windows 10 versions, namely version 2004, 20H2, or 21H1, then the update you should get is KB5006670, and just like before, it comes with the same changelog on all versions.

This is because these three Windows 10 releases share a similar codebase, so Microsoft is using the same cumulative updates to service all of them.

Just a single line in the changelog

As for what’s new in Windows 10 cumulative update KB5006670, Microsoft says it corrected an issue affecting several applications, including Microsoft Office.

The company explains the following about the update:

“Addresses an issue that prevents some applications, such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Reader, from opening or causes them to stop responding. This occurs on devices that are subject to Microsoft Exploit Protection for Export Address Filtering (EAF).”

Most likely, it also comes with other smaller refinements under the hood, but no further info has been shared in this regard, and this is the only line in the changelog.

There are no new known issues in this cumulative update, as Microsoft says it’s aware of just two problems that may be hitting Windows 10 PCs, both coming from the previous releases.

The first of them affects Microsoft Edge, as Microsoft says some devices still running the legacy version of the browser might still not get the new browser, as part of the update process.

And the second could lead to some computers becoming unable to install new updates.

“After installing the June 21, 2021 (KB5003690) update, some devices cannot install new updates, such as the July 6, 2021 (KB5004945) or later updates. You will receive the error message, PSFX_E_MATCHING_BINARY_MISSING,” Microsoft says.
