New cumulative update preview is now live for Windows 10

Microsoft has released a new Windows 10 cumulative update preview for testing, only one week before the company is projected to release a new round of security fixes as part of the February 2021 Patch Tuesday cycle.

The new update available today as optional is KB4598291k for Windows 10 version 2004 and Windows 10 version 20H2, and it comes with plenty of fixes, including for a bug that makes it impossible for users to open a document stored on the desktop.

At the same time, Microsoft says this update resolves an issue causing a device to stop responding when a game runs in full screen mode, as well as a glitch that suddenly causes some Windows 10 Education devices to be listed as not activated.

There are also improvements for consumers, including for issues that cause the Alt+Tab UI to be activated all of a sudden and switch users to a different window. And the company says it also corrected a problem that prevents the Extract All option from showing up for an online-only ZIP archive.

No new known issues

When it comes to known issues, there are two of them and both are inherited from the previous cumulative updates. One of them concerns system and user certificates, as Microsoft explains.

“System and user certificates might be lost when updating a device from Windows 10, version 1809 or later to a later version of Windows 10. Devices will only be impacted if they have already installed any Latest cumulative update (LCU) released September 16, 2020 or later and then proceed to update to a later version of Windows 10 from media or an installation source which does not have an LCU released October 13, 2020 or later integrated. This primarily happens when managed devices are updated using outdated bundles or media through an update management tool such as Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) or Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager. This might also happen when using outdated physical media or ISO images that do not have the latest updates integrated,” it says.

The new update is available today as optional, but all improvements it includes should go live for everybody as soon as the next week.
