Microsoft has released a new Windows 10 cumulative update preview for version 2004 and 20H2, finally fixing a series of problems in the operating system ahead of the December 2020 Patch Tuesday cycle happening next week.

The new cumulative update is KB4586853, and it increases the OS build number to 19041.662 and 19042.662, depending on the Windows 10 version you are running.

Worth knowing is this is the last cumulative update preview of the year, as Microsoft won’t publish an optional update in December.

“Because of minimal operations during the holidays and the upcoming Western new year, there won’t be a preview release (known as a “C” release) for the month of December 2020. There will be a monthly security release (known as a “B” release) for December 2020. Normal monthly servicing for both B and C releases will resume in January 2021,” Microsoft says.

As for what’s new in this cumulative update, Microsoft explains it resolved and issue causing the Narrator to stop responding after unlocking a device. Furthermore, the company has finally fixed a bug hitting USB 3.0 hubs and causing a connected device to stop working when it enters hibernation or reboots.

Microsoft also explains that this update finally resolves a bug breaking down the Microsoft Xbox Game Bar controls on some supported monitors.

For enterprises, there are several important fixes, as follows:

  • Addresses an issue that prevents you from signing in on certain servers. This occurs when you enable a Group Policy that forces the start of a computer session to be interactive.
  • Addresses an issue that fails to set the desktop wallpaper as configured by a GPO when you specify the local background as a solid color.
  • Addresses an issue with the Microsoft Pinyin IME that unexpectedly dismisses the candidate pane when you type certain phrases.

KB4586853 comes with the same known issues as the previous cumulative updates and these include a bug breaking down the Microsoft Input Method Editor for Japanese or Chinese and a glitch affecting the system and user certificates.

The latter has been introduced earlier this fall, and Microsoft says it’s still working on a full fix, telling used to go back to the previous version of Windows is they come across this certificate problem.

“System and user certificates might be lost when updating a device from Windows 10, version 1809 or later to a later version of Windows 10. Devices will only be impacted if they have already installed any Latest cumulative update (LCU) released September 16, 2020 or later and then proceed to update to a later version of Windows 10 from media or an installation source which does not have an LCU released October 13, 2020 or later integrated. This primarily happens when managed devices are updated using outdated bundles or media through an update management tool such as Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) or Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager. This might also happen when using outdated physical media or ISO images that do not have the latest updates integrated,” Microsoft says.

Full details are available on the KB page mentioned above.

All the improvements that are included in this cumulative update will go live in the next updates going live for production devices on the Patch Tuesday cycle scheduled to kick off in less than one week. At that point, new cumulative updates will be automatically pushed via Windows Update – if you want to download KB4586853, you can just head over to Windows Update and manually check for updates on your Windows 10 version 2004 or 20H2 device.
