New cumulative update for Windows 10 May 2020 Update

It’s Patch Tuesday, and naturally, Microsoft has released a new set of cumulative updates for all Windows 10 versions, including the recently released May 2020 Update (version 2004).

Since the rollout of this feature update is still underway, only devices where version 2004 is already installed are getting Windows 10 cumulative update KB4565503.

The OS build after installing cumulative update KB4565503 is 19041.388 – you can check it by clicking the Start menu and then typing winver.

The first thing you need to know about this cumulative update is that it’s focused on security improvements, but this is something that was rather expected since it lands on a Patch Tuesday. However, it also comprises additional non-security improvements, including for the experience with games and applications that previously encountered a visual distortion when resizing in windows mode.

First and foremost, the security patches. As it happens every month, Microsoft provides a list of Windows components and apps that are getting security updates, and this month the list includes the following:

“Security updates to the Microsoft Scripting Engine, Windows App Platform and Frameworks, the Microsoft Store, Windows Graphics, Windows Input and Composition, Windows Media, Windows Shell, Windows Fundamentals, Windows Management, Windows Kernel, Windows Hybrid Cloud Networking, Windows Storage and Filesystems, Windows Update Stack, Windows MSXML, Windows File Server and Clustering, Windows Remote Desktop, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge Legacy, and the Microsoft JET Database Engine.”

There are also other highly anticipated non-security fixes, including for a bug that broke down some apps when trying to print documents with certain graphics or large files. Microsoft says the whole thing happened after installing the Windows updates that were published as part of the June 2020 Patch Tuesday, so this new cumulative update comes to resolve this.

OneDrive users are getting a welcome fix too, as cumulative update KB4565503 improves the experience with the desktop app. Microsoft explains the following:

“Addresses an issue that might prevent you from connecting to OneDrive using the OneDrive app. This issue occurs on some older devices or on devices that have older apps, which use legacy file system filter drivers. As a result, this might prevent these devices from downloading new files or opening previously synced or downloaded files.”

Windows 10 cumulative update comes with just a single known issue, and it affects users who enabled Chinese or Japanese for the Microsoft IME in certain apps.

“When using some apps, such as Microsoft Excel, users of the Microsoft Input Method Editor (IME) for Chinese and Japanese might receive an error, or the app might stop responding or close when attempting to drag using the mouse.”

This new update is available via Windows Update, but it can also be downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog website. Of course, it’s also offered on the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

For Windows 10 users, this cumulative update is downloaded and installed automatically, and a reboot is necessary to complete the installation.

As for any possible issues, it’s too early to tell if everything’s working properly or cumulative update KB4565503 fails to install or causes other issues on Windows 10 devices. We already installed this update on our testing systems and no problems have been encountered whatsoever.

Of course, we’ll continue to monitor all reports to let you know if something goes wrong after installing this cumulative update. In the meantime, you are recommended to create a backup before anything else, just to make sure that you can restore your device to a working state in case this new cumulative update breaks something on the computer.
