New update for Windows 10 May 2019 Update

Microsoft has released new cumulative updates for all Windows 10 versions, including for May 2019 Update, also referred to as version 1903.

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4517389 increases the OS build number to 18362.418, so after the install, typing winver in the Start menu should return this number.

The new Windows 10 version 1903 cumulative update brings security improvements for Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge, while also improving the process of verifying usernames and passwords and storing and managing files.

The most important change concerns an issue causing increased connection latency and CPU usage on computers, either clients or servers, that don’t use Extended Master Secret (EMS) RFC 7627.

“This issue occurs while performing full Transport Layer Security (TLS) handshakes from devices that don’t support EMS, especially on servers. EMS support has been available for all the supported versions of Windows since calendar year 2015 and is being incrementally enforced by the installation of the October 8, 2019 and later monthly updates,” Microsoft explains.

No failed installs so far

Additionally, there are new improvements to resolve a bug in Windows 10 that broke down the printing process. Microsoft says that the issue affected apps and printers that rely on the Windows JavaScript engine to process a print job, so after installing cumulative update KB4517389, everything should work correctly.

And because this update lands on a Patch Tuesday, there are security patches for Windows 10 and built-in components, including the browsers mentioned above as well as Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Windows Authentication, the Windows Kernel, and the Microsoft Scripting engine.

At the time of writing this article, I’m not aware of any failed installs, but as it happens every month, it could take a while before such issues are discovered. The rollout of the new cumulative update continues, so the more devices install it, the more chances to determine if this is a reliable update or not.
