A new preview build of Windows 10 is up for grabs

Microsoft has just released a new Windows 10 preview build to users who are enrolled in the Windows Insider program in the Dev Channel.

Windows 10 build 20201 doesn’t come with any new features, as the focus this time is exclusively on bug fixes. In other words, you won’t any new stuff here, as build 20201 is all about improving the performance fixing bugs that have been discovered in the OS.

There are five different improvements in this new build, and the first of them concerns the Microsoft Store.

As we’ve known for a while, Microsoft has tried to make the Microsoft Store the one destination for everything, including for games. But more recently, some of the games that were offered through the Microsoft Store actually failed to launch, and Microsoft says it’s because of a bug that affects only Easy Anti-Cheat titles. And while the issue has now been resolved, the company explains that game developers themselves might need to come up with an update for the whole thing.

“We’ve fixed an issue where some Microsoft Store games protected by Easy Anti-Cheat failed to launch. Some games may still need to release an update to fully resolve the issue,” Microsoft explains.

Additionally, Microsoft says it had added more IDE improvements in this update.

“We fixed an issue where the IME mode indicator in the taskbar was indicating that the IME was enabled when it was actually in disabled state,” the company explains.

In addition, Windows 10 build 20201 includes improvements for HDR monitors, as some of them appeared black in the previous builds whenever users enabled HDR. Today’s build also comes with a fix aimed at UWP apps, as Microsoft says that the window control buttons couldn’t follow the window whenever users resized them.

And last but not least, this build fixes an issue causing SetInputScore to stop working whenever it was called after an app using it was started.

There are several known issues in this update, and some of them concern the new taskbar experience for pinned sites.

Microsoft explains the following:

“We’re investigating reports that the new taskbar experience for pinned sites isn’t working for some sites. We’re working on enabling the new taskbar experience for existing pinned sites. In the meantime, you can unpin the site from the taskbar, remove it from the edge://apps page, and then re-pin the site. We’re working on a fix for an issue where pinned sites don’t show all open tabs for a domain. In the meantime, you can fix this by pinning the site’s homepage rather than a specific page (e.g. pin microsoft.com rather than microsoft.com/windows).”

In addition, the company says that it’s aware of an issue that causes Office documents to open blank whenever the launch is triggered by File Explorer. In other words, if you double-click a Microsoft Office document from File Explorer, there’s a good chance that it opens blank, so what you need to do is just launch it with another app or right from Office itself.

Installing the new build could also prove to be quite a challenging process, as in some cases, the update process could appear to be hanging. This is something that the company is already investigating, as the update experience obviously needs to be as fast as possible.

Needless to say, it’s pretty clear this a bug-fixing build, and despite not coming with any new features, users in the Dev Channel should get it anyway, especially if they previously encountered one of the bugs mentioned here.
