As I told you a few minutes ago, the September 2018 Patch Tuesday rollout has officially started, and the Windows 10 April 2018 Update is one of the versions getting a new cumulative update.

Windows 10 April 2018 Update, also known as version 1803, is the most recent version of Windows 10. The cumulative update that it’s getting today is KB4457128, and it bumps the OS build number to 17134.285.

The changelog, which you can read in full in the box after the jump, includes both security and non-security fixes, but the first are the most important because they resolve vulnerabilities in the OS.

For example, Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer are getting security improvements, despite the latter browser no longer getting too much love from Microsoft. Additional modules like the Windows kernel and the scripting engine are also getting security fixes.

Non-security improvements

When it comes to release notes that do not necessarily concern the security side of the patch, there are several lines that are worth a look.

As Microsoft explains, it has corrected a problem causing high CPU usage on some Windows 10 devices. Here's the excerpt from the changelog:

"Addresses an issue that causes the Program Compatibility Assistant (PCA) service to have excessive CPU usage. This occurs when the concurrency of two simultaneous add and remove programs (ARP) monitoring threads is not handled correctly."

This cumulative update also introduces additional mitigations for Spectre Variant 2 vulnerability, as Microsoft continues the process of resolving the hardware flaws disclosed earlier this year and hitting Intel chips.

At the time of writing this article, we aren’t aware of any issues with this cumulative update, but we’ll continue to monitor social media and support forums and circle back to you should any problems be reported.
