As we announced a few minutes ago, Microsoft shipped a new batch of cumulative updates for Windows 10 as part of its security cycle, and just as expected, the April 2018 Update is getting its own release.

The Windows 10 April 2018 Update cumulative update is KB4284835 and it bumps the OS version to 17134.112. This OS build number lets you check whether the update installed correctly or not – to do this, just press Win key + R and then type winver. If the version number displayed in the dialog is the same as the one above, the update installed correctly.

Since it’s released on Patch Tuesday, cumulative update brings both security and non-security improvements to Windows 10 April 2018 Update.

What’s new in cumulative update KB4284835

As it happens every month, there are security improvements for Windows 10 April 2018 Update and the pre-installed apps and modules.

Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer are getting security fixes, and so is the Graphics component, the Windows Kernel and the Scripting engine. This is one of the reasons you should install this update as soon as possible, as vulnerabilities in the software are finally resolved.

As for the non-security refinements in this update, you can check the release notes at the end of the article for full information. And yet, there is one that is really worth mentioning.

Microsoft has fixed an issue causing systems to boot to a black screen after upgrading to the April 2018 Update and hitting quite a lot of systems. As Microsoft explains:

“Addresses an issue that caused the system to start up to a black screen. This issue occurs because previous updates to the Spring Creators Update were incompatible with specific versions of PC tune-up utilities after installation.”

Right now, there are no reports of failed installs hitting cumulative update KB4284835, but since the rollout has just started, it remains to be seen if everyone is going to experience smooth performance. We’ll continue to monitor the main channels and let you know if any bugs are discovered.
