Version 1703 getting a new cumulative update today

Microsoft has released a new batch of Windows 10 cumulative updates, and while the April 2018 hasn’t received any new goodies, the much older Creators Update actually has, and it brings lots of improvements.

Before anything, keep in mind that this is a non-security release – Microsoft ships fixes for security vulnerabilities on Patch Tuesday, which happens the second Tuesday of each month. Today’s rollout is all about fixing non-security bugs and delivering operating system improvements.

Windows 10 Creators Update is being provided with cumulative update KB4284830, and the first thing you’ll notice is that the build number is updated to 15063.1182. To check this, press Win key + R and then type winver.

The changelog

Most of the improvements that are part of this update are aimed at enterprises, as they resolve issues in features that aren’t specifically targeting consumers.

For example, cumulative update KB4284830 fixes a performance regression bug in App-V that could slow down tasks in Windows 10, while also resolving a bug where SmartHeap does not work with UCRT. Windows Authentication Manager is also getting some refinements, as this update fixes sporadic authentication issues, while the LSASS service should no longer become unresponsive.

This last problem has previously required a system reboot to restore functionality, so users hitting this should install cumulative update KB4284830 as soon as possible.

There are also fixes in MSXML, and Microsoft details them with the following line in the release notes: “Addresses an issue in MSXML 3.0 that causes the body of the request to be empty when the IXMLHTTPRequest send() method is called. This issue occurs when URL redirection causes the send() method to be invoked a second time with a different URL.”

There are no known issues in this cumulative update, which means that it should install correctly for everyone, though this is something that remains to be discovered as more users receive it.
