The jailbreak was performed on the first iOS 12 beta

The iOS jailbreak scene isn't what it used to be a few years ago, but hackers are still trying to exploit bugs in Apple's mobile operating system for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices in an attempt to release an untethered jailbreak of the latest iOS version.

While there isn't and probably won't be an untethered, public jailbreak released for Apple's latest iOS 11.4 mobile operating system, it would appear that Liang Chen of the Tencent Keen Lab managed to exploit some vulnerabilities found in the first beta of Apple's upcoming iOS 12 operating system to demo the first iOS 12 jailbreak.

The jailbreak, which you can see in action by watching the video attached at the end of the article, was achieved on an iPhone X smartphone. It appears to use a kernel exploit found in the iOS 12 beta 1 release, and it even supports Cydia third-party package managed created by Jay Freeman.

Final iOS 12 release will most probably patch the exploit

It's not a strange thing for beta versions of iOS to contain vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit to do various things, such as a jailbreak, so it's no wonder iOS 12 beta 1 contains a few flaws, which, most probably, Apple will fix in one of the next beta builds that it plans to release throughout the entire development cycle.

On the other hand, it doesn't appear Liang Chen has any plans to release his jailbreak method to the public, at least not now when iOS 12 is in early development stages. All he wanted was to show the world that iOS 12 can be jailbroken, and probably to report the vulnerabilities he and his team found to Apple.

As such, the final iOS 12 release coming this fall will probably won't be exploitable so don't expect an untethered jailbreak anytime soon. The second beta release of iOS 12 is expected to arrive this week and it remains to be seen if the kernel exploit has been patched or not. Meanwhile, enjoy the video demonstration below!
