First update for version 1803, first issues reported

This month’s Patch Tuesday cycle includes the first cumulative update for Windows 10 April 2018 Update, but by the looks of things, this causes more harm than good on a number of systems.

I’m seeing an increasing number of reports pointing to critical issues with Windows 10 cumulative update KB4103721 for April 2018 Update (version 1803), with the worst of them bricking PCs and preventing them from booting.

Posts on reddit and on Microsoft’s Community forums confirm there’s indeed a problem with this cumulative update, though it’s essential to note that not all systems are impacted. At this point, it’s hard to determine a pattern, but in most of the cases, users explain that KB4103721 installs correctly, but after the first boot, it pushes the device to a black screen.

“The update is bricking my computer. After the update (KB4103721) download and installs, after restarting my computer will hang on a black screen and do nothing. The only way to fix it is to restore my PC to a previous restore point, where the PC will boot up normally again. Automatic Updates then installed the update again and the issue returned. After a restore point, my PC booted again,” one user explains on reddit.

Microsoft not aware of any issues

Several users confirmed on Microsoft’s Community forums that cumulative update KB4103721 brings their devices to a black screen, preventing them from booting. Restoring the system to a previous point and downgrading to Windows 10 Fall Creators Update appear to be the only workarounds.

KB4103721 installed correctly on our machines here at Softpedia and Microsoft is yet to acknowledge issues with this cumulative update. The official KB page still indicates that “Microsoft is not currently aware of any issues with this update.”

We’ve reached out to Microsoft to ask for more information about this update. If the number of systems that are getting bricked due to KB4103721 is growing, this update should be pulled, so for the time being, it might be a smart decision to delay its deployment.
