A new faction and tactical options for never ending war

My Warboss is up close and personal with a Space Marine Dreadnought, ready to attack it up to three times. I managed to execute a decent flanking move using this leader, a few normal Ork Boyz, and some Gretchins to use as cannon fodder if needed. But now the enemy mech needs a little softening up before my hero can turn it into scrap. Maybe the chopper can help, with either a bombing run or some long-range rocket fire.

So I command my own Deff Dread to fire at it from afar, which is enough to eliminate it this round. A mix of Boyz fire and Meganobz melee attacks kills a few other squads of Space Marines before they can attack again. But I know that their own heroes cannot be too far behind and that they will likely be escorted by some other top-tier troops.

As expected, groups of marines appear, some met with overwatch fire from my own Ork forces. They easily eliminate a few weakened squads but make the mistake of pushing toward the center of my line. Squads of Meganoobz and supporting fire from the rest should make it easy to blunt their assault and then eliminate the leaders one by one.

Orks is a new downloadable content pack for Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector, developed by Black Lab Games and published by Slitherine Ltd. This DLC continues the practice of adding new factions to the strategy title, with players now able to launch their own Waaagh while playing as the most war-obsessed race in this universe.

The Ork faction is structured like any other, around capable heroes and their special abilities. They will be the focus of all engagements, which use the same core principles of momentum, overwatch, and turn-based actions as the rest of the factions. The computer can pose a challenge, although it needs to learn to concentrate its forces better and focus attacks on weaker player squads.

In Planetary Conquest, an Ork player starts off with relatively weak Boyz, Gretchins, and Stormboyz. Get a few research points and more options open up, including the wonderfully weird Deffkopta and the long-range Flash Gitz. Better momentum leads to more accurate ranged fire and the Orks can also count on their Waaagh to carry them through a tough fight.

Space Marines, with their higher individual squad quality, and the Tyranids, with their ability to poison, were the biggest threat during my campaigns. The game’s tactical core continues to be strong and creates fun and tense matches, especially on the higher difficulties. Planetary Conquest lacks big strategic choices and should get some new mechanics in coming content packs.

Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector – Orks lavishes as much attention on Greenskins’ presentation as it did for its other factions. Zoom in close to see the weird design of their leaders and the small details on all the other units, even the lowly Gretchins. The game’s interface is easy to understand and use. The Orks have all the voice lines fans of the faction expect and the soundtrack provides good accompaniment for a massive Waaagh.

Conclusion

Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector – Orks is another good piece of downloadable content for a great tactical game. The new faction tweaks the core mechanics just enough to make things interesting, offering solid match-ups against Space Marines, Sisters of Battle, Necrons, Tyranids, and Chaos opponents.

This is a clear Yay for any fan of the Orks and for gamers who want more gameplay variety. I still think that these DLC drops should also enhance the core ideas of Planetary Conquest, which can sometimes feel a little dull. But the Orks DLC is a solid release that showcases the tactical strengths of Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector.
