Blizzard is bringing back some of its older games

Blizzard is remastering Warcraft III, and it’s calling it Reforged. It’s a call back to a glorious era when RTS games were ruling the world, and when Blizzard was still young.

The latest Blizzcon is probably going to be remembered as an utter failure for Blizzard, mostly because of one particular announcement. They figured that the gaming community is just itching to play Diablo on smartphones. They figured wrong, and the entire community has turned against them.

Among the other stuff that was revealed at BlizzCon 2018 was Warcraft III: Reforged, which is exactly what it sounds like; a remastered version of the incredibly successful Warcraft III that was initially released all the way back in 2002.

It’s not just a facelift

Blizzard also chose to remaster Starcraft, but for that game, they limited themselves to an engine facelift, with high-resolution textures, improved animations, and a few other features. It was for the best as the community would not have approved for more substantial changes.

With Warcraft III: Reforged, Blizzard intends to change others aspect, such as map design, for example. It’s going to be substantial, but they think it will make more sense. They did learn a few things in the interim.

We won’t know exactly how things are going to change for the gameplay, but the developers say that “every character, structure, and environment has been recreated to emphasis the depth, dimension, and personality of this rough-hewn fantasy world.” Of course, 4K support is implemented by default.

Some might think that remastering old games is a piece of cake, but developers also take a big risk. They could make things worse or modify something that older players won’t like. There is always that chance.

In any case, Warcraft III: Reforged is scheduled to be released on or before December 31, 2019.
