Verizon and Samsung announced the release of a commercial 5G smartphone on the U.S. market during the first half of 2019 with a proof of concept device to be showcased at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Technology Summit, December 4 - 6, 2018, in Maui.

“5G will usher in a new era of mobile connectivity, allowing people to connect to data, experiences and other people in ways never thought possible,” stated Brian Higgins, Verizon's wireless device and product marketing VP.

Moreover, “Together, Samsung and Verizon have made huge gains in bringing 5G commercial services to consumers in several cities. Now, we’re partnering to create a smartphone to put the power of 5G in the palm of your hand.”

The Samsung and Verizon branded 5G smartphone will use the "upcoming flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon Mobile Platform with the Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem and antenna modules" according to the joint press release.

Furthermore, the device will also come with built-in RF front-end and antenna elements, as well as an integrated RF transceiver.

Customers will be able to use the new device on Verizon's 5G Ultra Wideband network

As detailed in the Samsung and Verizon statement, the 5G service used by the new smartphone will be able to provide download speeds up to at least 50 faster than the current 4G LTE tech used by mobile networks, combined with almost imperceivable network latency for instant access to Internet content.

Given that Verizon already launched their commercial 5G Home service Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, and Sacramento during October, and it will go live throughout the U.S. during early 2019.

This will allow customers who will buy the new 5G smartphone to benefit from the increased speeds of Verizon's 5G Ultra Wideband network tech straightaway with faster than ever access to mobile services and features.

“We’re proud to work alongside innovative partners like Verizon and Qualcomm Technologies to deliver a smartphone that will fundamentally transform how people work and play,” added Justin Denison, Samsung Electronics America SVP of Mobile Product Strategy and Marketing.
