And US officials really don’t seem to care

United States President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Friday to reveal the new Space Force logo, which the commander-in-chief proudly described as “the sixth branch of our magnificent military.”

But as it typically happens when Donald Trump tweets, there’s something in his post that caused quite a controversy during the weekend.

The new Space Force logo looks a lot like the Starfleet Command symbol from the Star Trek series, as they both use a delta, a globe, a rocket, and stars in a round shape, with the names of the organization placed on the outer edge.

“After consultation with our Great Military Leaders, designers, and others, I am pleased to present the new logo for the United States Space Force, the Sixth Branch of our Magnificent Military!” Donald Trump tweeted.

“I’m just amused”

It didn’t take long for the WWW to notice the resemblance between the two logos, with some users expecting a lawsuit for copyright infringement.

George Takei, one of the stars of the original 1960s Star Trek series, joked about the new design, saying the US government should pay royalties for the Space Force logo.

Michael Okuda, who designed the Starfleet Command logo for Paramount, discussed the new logo in a post on Facebook.

“The arrowhead in the US Space Force logo appears to be borrowed from the US Air Force Space Command emblem, which has been in use since the 1980s. Arrowheads and swooshes and orbits and stars and planets have been used in space emblems long before either of these emblems,” he explained.

“For whatever it's worth - and I do not own the intellectual property rights in most of my Star Trek work - I'm not offended by the similarities, nor would I accuse the Space Force of plagiarism. I'm just amused. It ain't that serious.”

United States officials did not response to all the criticism, and there’s a good chance they’ll never will.
