This is HP’s Elite Pro X3, the device that never came to be

It’s all just a matter of time until Windows 10 Mobile goes dark once and for all, but despite the 0 percent market share, there are still a lot of diehards out there who pray for Microsoft to have a last-minute change of mind.

Needless to say, this is pretty much impossible, so in the meantime, we can only look back and wonder what Windows Phone could have been if Microsoft was fully committed to it.

One of the smartphones that never came to be is the HP Elite Pro X3, a Windows 10 Mobile device that HP wanted to release as a successor of the HP Elite X3.

As I said when I reviewed the HP Elite X3, this was a terrific Windows 10 Mobile device, so not seeing its successor hitting the shelves is disappointing.

Flagship specs

But of course, nobody can blame HP for not going all the way with this project. Microsoft started stepping away from Windows 10 Mobile many years ago, so its partners, and I include here device manufacturers and developers, did pretty much the same thing too.

According to a leak from @Hikari_Calyx (via WL), the HP Elite Pro X3 was supposed to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, a processor which at that time was the most powerful choice in the mobile world. This would have made the HP smartphone a flagship in all regards.

Additionally, the device was built with an IPS display whose size was not disclosed, but its resolution was expected to be 1080x1920 pixels. Other specs included 32GB of internal storage, microSD card support, and 4GB RAM, again fairly impressive for that year.

Meanwhile, HP abandoned its Windows 10 Mobile plans, just like Microsoft, so the pictures here are the only things we’re left with after another big dream failed to come true.
