Ubuntu MATE lead developer and maintainer Martin Wimpress announced the release of Ubuntu MATE 18.10 as part of Canonical's Ubuntu 18.10 (Cosmic Cuttlefish) operating system series.

Shipping with the latest MATE 1.20.3 desktop environment and Linux 4.18 kernel, Ubuntu MATE 18.10 is now available with updated apps and core components, better hardware support, and, for the first time, images for the GDP Pocket and GDP Pocket 2 handheld computers, along with the generic images for 64-bit Intel PCs.

According to Martin Wimpress, Ubuntu MATE 18.10 (Cosmic Cuttlefish) includes some hardware-specific tweaks and other improvements to core components in an attempt to make the Linux-based operating system work out-of-the-box and without any hiccups on both the GDP Pocket and GDP Pocket 2 tiny computers.

These include frame buffer and touchscreen rotation, internal display rotation for X.Org Server, HiDPI support for the Slick Greeter display manager, Wi-Fi support for the original GPD Pocket with the BRMC4356 driver, double console (tty) font resolution, and scaled display resolution in the desktop session to 1280x800 pixels.

"Ubuntu MATE 18.10 is a modest, yet strategic, upgrade over our 18.04 release. If you want bug fixes and improved hardware support then 18.10 is for you. For those who prefer staying on the LTS then everything in this 18.10 release is also important for the upcoming 18.04.2 release," Martin Wimpress wrote in the release notes.

Raspberry Pi images coming soon, too

Apart from using the latest MATE 1.20.3 desktop environment, the Ubuntu MATE 18.10 (Cosmic Cuttlefish) operating system ships with the Mozilla Firefox 59.0.2 as default web browser, VLC 3.0.4 as default media player, LibreOffice 6.1.2.1 as default office suite, and Mozilla Thunderbird 60.2.1 as default email, RSS, and news client.

You can download Ubuntu MATE 18.10 for 64-bit PCs, as well as GDP Pocket and GDP Pocket 2 computers right now. Raspberry Pi images of Ubuntu MATE 18.10 will be available as well for Raspberry Pi 2 and Raspberry Pi 3 single-board computers next month, according to Martin Wimpress.
