Ubuntu MATE 18.04 LTS has been released as part of yesterday's Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) operating system series as the official flavor for fans of the lightweight MATE desktop environment.

Powered by the Linux 4.15 kernel series, which contains mitigations for the Meltdown and Spectre security vulnerabilities, and using the latest MATE 1.20.1 desktop environment by default, Ubuntu MATE 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) introduces numerous improvements and new features, including better support for HiDPI (High Dots Per Inch) displays, new desktop layouts, as well as support for indicators in all layouts by default.

"MATE Desktop 1.20.1 inclusion alone is enough to make Babbage weep with joy, but there is still more. Caja is primed to encrypt your secrets with GnuPG, and with bulk renaming built right into the file manager you can finally deal with those pesky family reunion photos," said Martin Wimpress. "Got a fancy new display and itty bitty pixels? HiDPI support bounds into this LTS, it’s so dynamic you won’t know what to do with yourself."

Minimal Installation, improved components and apps

Lots of the included components and apps of the Ubuntu MATE 18.04 LTS operating system received several improvements. Among these, we can mention the Caja file manager, which can now encrypt your most precious files, Marco window manager, which got hardware acceleration, MATE Dock Applet, which now features icon scrolling and matching, and MATE Tweak, which now lets you toggle the HiDPI mode more easily.

Created in collaboration with the Solus Project, the Brisk Menu applications menu is now enabled by default in Ubuntu MATE 18.04 LTS, which ships with the Head-Up Display (HUD) feature of the Unity 7 desktop environment and a revamped Ubuntu MATE Welcome screen that now includes browser selection support and system telemetry if you want to help the Ubuntu MATE team improve future releases.

Last but certainly not least, there's now the "Minimal Installation" option in the graphical installer so you can install Ubuntu MATE with only the Mozilla Firefox web browser and a handful of standard utilities, Slick Greeter as default login screen, color emoji support for most apps, and the latest software components, including VLC Media Player 3.0, LibreOffice 6.0, and Mozilla Thunderbird 52.7.0.
