The leader of the Ubuntu MATE project, Martin Wimpress, announced a few moments ago that the forthcoming Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system would feature full support for Client Side Decoration (CSD) and Header Bar applications.

According to Mr. Wimpress, who posted a screenshot of Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS daily build on his Google+ page, the upcoming GNU/Linux distribution will offer users applications that fully support Client Side Decoration (CSD) and Header Bars.

In the screenshot that you can find attached on the right side of the article, you'll see a bunch of applications running on top of Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS with the Marco window manager and software compositing enabled by default.

"You'll notice that shadows are fully rendered, and the applications that support it, are also resizeable. Pop-overs are also correctly rendered. The CSD support also works without a compositor, naturally there will be no shadows in this case," says Martin Wimpress.

Qt apps will look much better on Ubuntu MATE 16.04

Besides implementing full support for Client Side Decoration (CSD) and Header Bar applications in Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus), the development team also worked hard this cycle to update the scrollbars and buttons for GTK3/2 themes, which will now be aligned more closely.

Furthermore, Qt5 and Qt4 apps should look much better on Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS, which will see the light of day on April 21, 2016, along with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and the rest of the official flavors. Thanks to all of these improvements, Ubuntu MATE is finally bridging the gap between modern and traditional apps.

As you've probably already noticed, there's a dock shown in the Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS screenshot. Martin Wimpress himself confirms that it's the recently released Plank 0.11.0, which features support for docklets and the GTK+ 3.20 toolkit. Lastly, the screenshot shows full Synapse integration for the Synapse Indicator.
