Dell's George Barton announced today that the latest Dell Precision lineup developer edition is getting an updated operating system in the name of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver).

Announced earlier this year as the thinnest, lightest, stunning, and most powerful mobile workstations powered by the Ubuntu Linux operating system, the new Dell Precision lineup includes the Dell Precision 5530, Dell Precision 3530, Dell Precision 7530, and Dell Precision 7730. And the first two are now finally getting the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) update.

"We wanted to end 2018 on a high note.  As of Friday, the developer editions of the Precision 5530 and 3530 mobile workstations are now available with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS," wrote Dell's George Barton on his blog. "The Precision 7530 and 7730 mobile workstations, built for even more compute-intensive workloads, will be offered with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS soon."

Upgrading from Ubuntu 16.04 LTS to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) launched in April 2018 as Canonical's latest and most advanced LTS (Long Term Support) operating system, bringing a much newer Linux kernel, the latest GNOME desktop environment by default, all the newest app versions, and much more. It is a worthy upgrade from Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) with a completely different experience.

Those of you owning a Dell Precision 5530 or Dell Precision 3530 mobile workstation who might want to upgrade from Ubuntu 16.04 LTS to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, should follow the instructions provided by us in this tutorial. And those who bought either the Dell Precision 7530 or Dell Precision 7730 mobile workstations should be able to upgrade as well shortly.

Over the last 20 years, Dell has been shipping mobile and desktop workstations preloaded with Linux-based operating systems that are available for sale in most markets, and the company promises to continue this trend in 2019 as well. According to George Barton, they have more things to show us in the year to come. But, until then, make sure you upgrade your Dell Precision laptops to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.
