The development team at The Creative Assembly and publisher SEGA are announcing that they are working on a major new expansion for Total War: Attila called Age of Charlemagne, which is set to be launched for all interested fans on December 10 with a wealth of new content.

Gamers will be able to get access to eight factions to play as, each of them with its set of unique mechanics.

The official announcement for the Age of Charlemagne expansion states, "The world lays in tatters, exhausted, bleeding, scarred and burnt, the people desperate. But even after the apocalypse there are men willing to give everything to return to light, to knowledge, to civilisation. Whatever the cost, and whatever the means..."

Gamers will start a new campaign in 768 AD as the king takes over from his dead father and starts a long process that will see him dominate most of Europe, managing to bring new lands under his rule using either diplomacy or warfare.

The map of the continent boasts a new layout, featuring 52 provinces, and The Creative Assembly is using an entirely new art style that's fit for the Middle Ages.

Age of Charlemagne for Total War: Attila will allow gamers to play as the Franks, the Vikings, the Saxons, and the Saracens, and more factions will be revealed before the official launch date.

For each of them, the studio is creating a unique set of units and clear win conditions linked to their ability to form a kingdom and dominate their surroundings.

Age of Charlemagne is the biggest expansion in the strategy series

The combat in the new content is designed to reflect the way technology is advancing and influencing both individual warrior equipment and tactics.

Infantry is better armored than ever before, deployed in stricter battle lines and able to hold more ground, and there's more cavalry, used in a shock role, present on the battlefields, including the fearsome Norman knights.

The Creative Assembly says that more than 300 units will be featured in Age of Charlemagne, including Thegns, Fyrd Axemen, Scola Knights, Berber Jinetes, Gazehounds and the Seax-armed Saxons.

A new war weariness mechanic is being added to Total War: Attila, asking players to consider carefully each conflict that they start or face the possibility that their population will refuse to support their ruler.

Each faction will have unique events that will offer a clear narrative thread for the player to follow as they seek to create their Kingdom and dominate neighbors.

The studio is also promising a range of new buildings and development options for towns, with a focus on the rebuilding efforts that Europeans undertook as they emerged from the chaos of the Dark Ages.

Age of Charlemagne will also introduce tweaks to the agents, with each of the included categories gaining a unique set of skills that will make them very useful in limited situations as long as the player chooses the right upgrades.

Interested players can already place a pre-order for Age of Charlemagne for Total War: Attila using the Steam digital distribution platform.
