New 7P lens supplier likely to enter Apple’s playground

One of the features Apple is focusing on for the next-generation iPhone is the camera, with a recent report indicating the company wants to improve the ultra-wide lens on the device, all in an attempt to provide users with better performance in low light.

And now top Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo corroborates the report, explaining that Chinese supplier Sunny Optical is expected to enter Apple’s iPhone playground with its very own 7P wide-angle lens for the upcoming smartphones.

The new iPhones are therefore expected to come with a wider aperture for the ultra-wide camera lens, with some sources claiming that what Apple is aiming for is f/1.8. The current iPhone 12 ships with f/2.4.

Kuo says Sunny Optical could help Apple add a second 7P lens supplier besides Largan, thus also allowing the company to negotiate prices more aggressively.

iPhone 13 due in September

Apple is projected to take the wraps off new iPhones as soon as this September, and this time there’s a good chance we won’t have to deal with any delays.

Kuo previously said Apple wants to launch all iPhones at the same time, so the company is now focusing more on the pre-launch phases of the iPhone 13 development, all in an attempt to make sure no delays are experienced.

Apple launched the iPhone 12 lineup in October and November, partially due to supply constraints and production issues caused by the pandemic. For iPhone 13, Apple is reportedly aiming for a simultaneous launch of all models, so if the traditional release calendar is used, then all iPhone 13 versions are projected to be announced in September and then start shipping later the same month.

Everything is still in the rumor stage for now, so a healthy pinch of salt is definitely recommended.
