Windows 10X will arrive for single-screen devices first

Windows 10X is Microsoft ambitious version of Windows 10 that’s supposed to power the dual-screen and foldable experiences, and the software giant announced last October that it’ll also serve as the core of the all-new Surface Neo.

Built with a dual-screen form factor in mind, Windows 10X itself struggles during these difficult times, especially as Microsoft’s push for this new category of devices is going through a series of changes.

And now the software giant admits that its dual-screen strategy can’t advance at the desired pace, so the operating system is also impacted.

But this bad news is good news for users, as Windows 10X not making its debut on dual-screen devices anytime soon actually means that it’ll be here for single-screen experiences.

Windows 10X coming soon

And according to Microsoft, that’s exactly the plan, albeit for the time being, the company doesn’t want to share any specifics as to when we could expect Windows 10X to go live on a device.

“With Windows 10X, we designed for flexibility, and that flexibility has enabled us to pivot our focus toward single-screen Windows 10X devices that leverage the power of the cloud to help our customers work, learn and play in new ways. These single-screen devices will be the first expression of Windows 10X that we deliver to our customers, and we will continue to look for the right moment, in conjunction with our OEM partners, to bring dual-screen devices to market,” Panos Panay, Chief Product Officer, Windows and Devices, said.

Windows 10X introduces a substantially more refined designed and is seen by many as the platform that Microsoft can use to compete against Google Chromebooks.

Whether or not this would work is something that remains to be seen, and with the debut of Windows 10X just around the corner, there’s a good chance so many people would want to give it a try that the usage of Windows 10 itself could also suffer.
