Microsoft new modern set of app icons also includes an updated design for the Windows 10 logo, which is very likely to be used as the Start button in the operating system as well.

The new design of the Windows 10 logo, which is based on Fluent Design, just like the other facelifted app icons, comes in line with recent redesigns that the software giant announced for Microsoft Office, Microsoft Edge, and others.

The logo gives up on the flat approach and muted colors, something which customers themselves required, according to Microsoft.

New design based on customer feedback

The company says that it reached out to users worldwide to determine the new design going forward, and the way the Windows 10 logo and the rest of the app icons look in these teasers is the result of the feedback it received.

“Our community has been on this journey with us from the beginning, and the path to this icon redesign was no different,” Jon Friedman, Head of Microsoft Office design, explains.

“We conducted countless rounds of research for every icon. From mild to wild, we explored a multitude of design directions and listened to customers around the world. We learned what didn’t resonate with people (flat design and muted colors) and what did (depth, gradations, vibrant colors, and motion), all of which drove our decisions.”

The logo that we see here isn’t necessarily surprising, as a similar design was previously included in renderings of Windows 10X, Microsoft’s dual-screen operating system that will power the Surface Neo.

The same design is likely to become the new default for the Windows Start button (the Start menu icon) both in full Windows 10 and in other variations of the operating system, such as Windows 10X. When this is expected to happen still remains to be seen, but most likely, the transition to the modern set of icons, including the Windows logo, will happen gradually throughout 2020.
