The icon is part of the latest iOS 16 beta

While iPhone users have pretty much gotten used to living without a battery percentage indicator on their devices, it doesn’t necessarily mean this is the most convenient approach.

Since the release of the iPhone X back in 2017, new-generation iPhones have been lacking a battery percentage indicator, instead only showing a generic battery icon to indicate the level in real-time.

It goes without saying an actual percentage comes in handier, but on the other hand, seeing such information isn’t possible without sliding down from the top of the screen. This is where Apple continues to display a battery percentage indicator, pretty much because this is the only place where the notch leaves enough room for this kind of data.

Apple, however, looks like it has found a way to display the battery percentage, even on devices where a notch is available.

The most recent iOS 16 build (still in the beta program) comes with a new battery icon that also shows the percentage in a way that reminds of Android devices. The battery level is now displayed inside the battery icon itself, therefore showing the percentage without the need to open the control center.

The new indicator is included in iOS 16 beta 5, and it will certainly go live for the iPhone in September when the new operating system version goes live.

The change comes just at the right time for Apple, as the company is currently working on giving up on the notch. The Pro models that will go live this year as part of the iPhone 14 lineup will no longer come with a notch but with a punch-hole screen.

The standard models will continue to sport a notch, but it’s believed it’s just a matter of time until they get a punch-hole as well.
