Samsung signs partnership with iFixit for new program

Unfortunately, each and every one of us learned the hard way that phone repairs are pretty costly. Replacing a broken screen costs at least a couple hundred dollars, while a new battery is often a process that’s way too complicated and typically requires the hand of a professional.

While tutorials on how to do the whole thing on our own are all over the web, it goes without saying this isn’t a job for the Average Joe.

But this doesn’t necessarily it can’t be. And Samsung apparently believes the same thing, with the company now announcing a partnership with iFixit whose purpose is to make it easier for customers out there to repair their phones on their own.

In other words, Samsung is working with iFixit on providing easy access to genuine device parts, repair tools, and visual step-by-step repair guides, so that users out there will be able to take product repair into their own hands.

Program launching in the summer

In case you’re wondering what repairs are covered, Samsung says you would eventually be able to replace display assemblies, the back glass, and even changing the ports. The program will launch in the summer in the United States and will include the Galaxy S20, the Galaxy S21, and the Galaxy Tab S7+, with more devices to be added at a later time.

“Samsung consumers will get access to genuine device parts, repair tools, and intuitive, visual, step-by-step repair guides. Samsung is collaborating with iFixit, the leading online repair community, on this program. More information will be shared once self-repair is available. To start, Galaxy device owners will be able to replace display assemblies, back glass, and charging ports — and return used parts to Samsung for responsible recycling. In the future, Samsung plans to expand self-repair to more devices and repairs from our extensive product portfolio,” Samsung explains.

At this point, there’s still no word as to whether the self-repair program will launch outside the U.S.
