Lock screen bug discovered and acknowledged

The recently-released iOS 12.2 beta 2 comes with an unexpected bug on the lock screen that replaces the date with the current level of the battery.

As you can see in the screenshot attached to the article and published by MacRumors, this iOS update somehow displays the battery level on the lock screen even when the device is not plugged in.

The typical behavior, with the date shown on the lock screen, is restored when the iPhone is connected to a charger, but it all comes back once again when the device is unplugged.

Apple has already acknowledged the bug, claiming a fix is on its way, most likely in the next beta build expected to launch in the coming weeks.

A bug, not a feature

And while this is clearly a bug that the Cupertino giant will sooner or later fix with a software update, it actually makes some people, including me, wonder why isn’t the company offering such options in iOS.

Being able to customize the information shown on the lock screen is something that iPhone users should be allowed to do, and despite Apple’s obsession for restricting everything in the operating system, this bug shows that it’s actually possible to open the door to small customizations.

iOS, in general, and the lock screen and the home screen, in particular, have become utterly boring in iOS, especially because their designs haven’t been refined in a long time. Apple doesn’t allow users to customize the appearance with anything else than wallpapers, and unfortunately, this is unlikely to change anytime soon.

iOS 13, which is expected to go live in September, will bring some overall refinements, including a dark theme, but other than that, there’s no indication that Apple wants to bring more customization options to iPhone users anytime soon.
