Albeit a few minor touches are needed here and there

File Explorer has indeed received some small refinements here and there in the last Windows 10 feature updates, including a dark mode, but the native file manager is still far from what the world’s number one desktop operating system should have shipped with in the first place.

And users out there know this very well.

File Explorer not only that is the app generating a huge amount of feedback, with users asking for everything from tab support to a new look, but also the one most often envisioned in modern concepts created by skilled designers in the Windows community.

This is the case of this concept posted on reddit by user URBTechRoss and which imagines a File Explorer UI that includes key refinements exactly in those areas that matter the most.

Genuine dark mode

The Fluent Design treatment is much more obvious in this concept than it is in Microsoft’s File Explorer version implemented in Windows 10, and the whole UI overall looks a lot more modern.

Additionally, the dark theme in this concept versus Microsoft’s pitch black version looks way better simply because it’s easier on the eyes, powering what can really be considered a full dark mode.

Obviously, it doesn’t necessarily mean this concept is flawless, and for example, I think the fonts in the right pane are a little too large versus the ones in the navigation pane. However, given all the resources that Microsoft has, fine-tuning such an idea shouldn’t be something too difficult, and as I said in the past, the company would really do itself a favor should it decides to get in touch with the people creating these.

As for a true revamp of File Explorer, don’t hold your breath for one just yet. The next feature update is due in the fall with under-the-hood refinements that do not include anything as substantial as a File Explorer overhaul.
