New Surface Pen passes FCC certification ahead of launch

Microsoft will take the wraps off its new Surface models in just a few weeks at a dedicated event in New York, and in addition to device upgrades, the company is also expected to unveil a new-generation Surface Pen.

While specifics and a confirmation regarding the debut of the Surface Pen are missing for the time being, a new stylus developed by the Redmond-based tech giant has recently passed FCC certification.

This is obviously a sign that the launch is just around the corner, and given a new Surface event will take place in early October, this is very likely the moment when the new Surface Pen will see daylight.

Unfortunately, FCC documents don’t disclose any specifics about new devices, so while we do find out that a new Surface Pen is coming, no other details are revealed.

Most likely, however, this is the Surface Pen that Microsoft will launch alongside the new Surface Pro 7, also expected to make its debut in October.

Of course, the same stylus will work with the other Surface models, but given the Surface Pro 7 is an entirely-new device, I expect Microsoft to demonstrate the Surface Pen capabilities on this particular model during the event.

Patents that have been swirling around the web throughout the year suggested that Microsoft was looking into several breaking features for the Surface Pen, including a small display that would make it possible for users to control its capabilities more seamlessly.

While such an upgrade is unlikely to make its way to the Surface Pen, I do expect improvements in other key area, including the battery department. Other usability and input refinements are also expected, but we’ll hear everything about what’s new on the Surface Pen in just a few weeks at the October event.
