Bring back the IE menu bar in modern browsers

Microsoft itself recommends against using Internet Explorer as a daily browser, and despite the company only shipping security updates and no new features to devices where it’s installed, so many people still rely on this app to navigate the web.

This is mostly the result of certain Internet Explorer features not available in modern browsers, and web browser expert Stefan Van Damme says the menu bar is certainly one of them.

“Since the years of Microsoft Internet Explorer, everyone uses and loves to navigate with the classic menu bar. That includes the menu items File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Window, and Help. So they can get quick access to the menu for editing and printing a web page. However, that menu bar is not available anymore in the new Microsoft Edge web browser,” he explains.

Proper Menubar

So to make everyone’s lives easier, Van Damme created an extension that pretty much brings the classic Internet Explorer menu bar to the new Microsoft Edge running on Chromium, making the experience with the browser a little bit more familiar for those who only now make the switch.

Windows 7 has recently reached the end of support, so the number of users upgrading to Windows 10 and presumably trying out the new Edge browser, is higher these days. Considering this en-masse migration to Windows 10, such an extension could really come in handy for those who just want to stick with a familiar approach in Windows.

“I understand the frustration that there is no menu bar on the web browser. That is why I as a web browser expert created this free Proper Menubar Microsoft Edge extension. So users can experience the real classic window menu design in his web browser. That from below the address bar and also in the extension icon as a vertical menu bar,” the developer explains.

Needless to say, the extension is available free of charge and can be installed from the Microsoft Edge Addons page using this link.
