Face ID components will be embedded into the glass

One of the biggest changes coming to the iPhone with the refresh happening this year is the demise of the notch, as Apple is reportedly working on a change that many people have been drooling over for years.

Multiple sources familiar with the matter confirmed that Apple wants to remove the notch from the Pro models launching in 2022, and now another tipster corroborates this information, adding that a hole-punch camera will almost certainly make its way to the production devices this year.

In other words, the notch is going away from the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max, with Apple to go for a punch-hole screen similar to the one that Samsung is already using on its flagship products.

@dylandkt says Face ID components will be placed under the screen, and according to the early testing, everything is working just as reliably as always. In other words, the Face ID performance hasn’t been impacted by the move of all components under the glass.

Apple will use a pill-shape punch-hole design, the Apple tipster says.

Four iPhone 14 models launching this year

Apple will unveil a lineup of four different models, including an all-new version that will be called iPhone 14 Max. This 6.7-inch model will replace the iPhone mini in Apple’s device lineup, with Apple to therefore stick with larger smartphones in the long term.

The only small iPhone will remain the iPhone SE, which will also get a refresh this year, once again based on the design of the iPhone 8. The device will introduce 5G support and additional camera refinements, though the overall form factor with a Home button and Touch ID will be retained.

The debut of the new iPhone SE could take in the spring, most likely in March or April.
